概要 【Purpose】
To report short-term effects of intravitreal injection treatment of aflibercept (IVA) against treatment-naïve cases with exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
【Patients & Methods】
We performed retrospective analysis of patients records with treatment-naive AMD cases who underwent IVA (aflibercept:2 mg/0.05 ml) therapy from January 2013 to June 2013 at the Kansai Medical University Hirakata hospital. All patients were evaluated one month after three monthly injections (induction phase) by fundus biomicroscopy and imaging studies (Optical Coherence Tomography : Spectralis OCTTM, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany).
【Results】
Forty eyes of forty patients were analyzed. Study cases included 28 (70%) male and 12 (30%) female with age of 52 to 87 years, with a mean of 73 years. There were 17 eyes (42.5%) with typical AMD, 17 eyes (42.5%) with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, and 6 (15%) eyes with retinal angiomatous proliferation. The mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA: logMAR) improved significantly, from 0.39 at baseline to 0.32 at one month after induction phase (P< 0.01). Best corrected visual acuity improved by 0.3 or more logMAR unit in 3 eyes(7.5%), stabilized in 37 eyes(92.5%). The mean central macular thickness decreased significantly, from 364.3µm at base line to 174.4µm at one month after induction phase. The ratio of dry macula was 37 eyes(92.5%) at one month after induction phase.
【Conclusion】
Although the further study over a longer period of time is needed, short-term visual and anatomical improvement was achieved by IVA in induction phase.
